The objective of this post-doctoral fellow position is to provide scientific assistance in a neurobiology laboratory in the Department of Neurology. This position will support the success of grant applications and manuscript publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals through the design and implementation of experiments involving specialized research procedures. Such support will help the Principal Investigator secure and maintain external funding which will enhance the stature and funding level of the Department as well as the individual laboratory.
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a progressive and debilitating disease. Brain development is abnormal in these boys. There is growing interest in the role of neuronal-glial interaction and on the individual role of glial cells on neuronal development. These interactions and individual cell types may constitute potential treatment targets. The overall aim of our laboratory is to understand how dystrophin deficiency affects neuronal and glial development, and to specifically study how dystrophin deficiency affects neuronal-glial cell development. The project will focus in studies of advanced cell culture systems, animal models, and molecular physiology including opportunities to train in electrophysiology. The post-doctoral fellow must be detail-oriented, well organized, reliable, and committed to pursuing scientific excellence through research.
We are looking for an ambitious, enthusiastic and highly motivated post-doctoral research associate with strong skills in molecular and cellular biology. The successful candidate will use molecular/cell-developmental biology methods to understand how dystrophin in the brain affects neuronal and glial cell development and function.
This position requires an independent, organized, and self-motivated individual with robust problem-solving skills. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic are essential.
Candidates must have a PhD in Neurobiology, Biology, or Biochemistry or related field. Other requirements include strong expertise in primary neuronal and glial cell cultures, immuno-histochemistry, protein quantification and in-vivo assays. Scientifically skilled as shown by scientific publications and presentations at national and international conferences. Be fluent in spoken and written English. Must have excellent communications skills and a demonstrated ability to work professionally and efficiently with students, faculty, and technical staff.
Responsibilities for this position include, animal handling, designing and conducting experiments, primary neuronal and glial cell isolation and culture, PCR, qPCR, protein extraction and analysis, microscopy, data entry and analysis, and general laboratory maintenance and organization. Familiarity or expertise in electrophysiology is welcome.
The candidate is expected to have knowledge of (i) histological procedures and microscopy (widefield and confocal); (ii) biochemical assays, including the isolation, purification, and characterization of proteins (e.g., western blotting) and molecular biology (e.g., isolation and characterization of nucleic acids, PCR, quantitative PCR), and (iii) cell culture (mice or human). Using all appropriate precautions, conduct critical experiments using histological procedures (tissue processing, sectioning, staining), immunohistochemistry, microscopy (widefield and confocal), and quantitative microscopy procedures. Carefully and neatly document process and results of all experiments.
The post-doctoral position is available for 1-2 years, with potential for extension beyond this period contingent upon progress and available funding. This position will follow the guidelines for compensation as recommended by the National Institutes of Health.
