We are recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to study paired brain and spinal cord electrical stimulation to promote recovery of movement following central nervous system injury. The project employs electrophysiology to test hypotheses about how to strengthen sensorimotor integration in the spinal cord. We are also developing and testing a closed loop system for applying spinal cord stimulation based on levels of brain activity from movement intent. The successful applicant will be motivated to understand the systems-level mechanisms of a powerful neuromodulation paradigm developed recently in the laboratory. In addition, the project involves viral manipulation of neural circuits, anatomical tracing imaged with tissue clearing, and novel assays of skilled forelimb function.
These and many other skills and cutting-edge techniques will be taught to the successful candidate. The scientist will join a dynamic and growing group of 9 investigators who use activity-based therapies, especially electrical stimulation, to promote neurological recovery after injury. We seek individuals with superior motivation, commitment, and attention to detail.
The research is conducted at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, which houses the medical school and biomedical graduate programs. The team includes faculty members from several Departments, including Neurology, Orthopedics, and Engineering. The position allows participation in a vast array of learning opportunities held at the Medical Center and nearby campuses, including the Zuckerman Institute for Mind, Brain, and Behavior. The scientific community is rich in ideas and cutting-edge scientific techniques. Compensation includes NIH scale salary, access to institutional housing, and full benefits. A commitment of at least 2 years of full-time work is required; the term may be renewable.
The successful candidate with report to Jason Carmel, MD, PhD, who is PI of the Movement Recovery Laboratory and the Scientific Director of the Weinberg Cerebral Palsy Center. There will also be frequent interactions with engineers, clinicians, and neuroscientists who pursue similar studies. To streamline the process of clinical research by modifying and standardizing routine data collection that will incorporate quality of life (QOL) questionnaire into clinical practice and enable every parent and/or child to complete the questionnaire;
To strengthen and expand high quality, interdisciplinary, clinical evaluative and policy research at the Health Sciences Campus of Columbia University;
To develop a clinical research curriculum;
To investigate and disseminate the health policy implications of our research findings and to use these data to empower health policy advocates.
