A funded postdoctoral position in Neuroscience is available for a highly motivated candidate in the laboratory of Dr. Cavalli at Washington University in Saint Louis, Department of Neuroscience, to study the epigenetic and glial control of axon regeneration and new strategies for spinal cord and optic nerve repair. The Cavalli lab studies the epigenetic mechanisms that dictate the regenerative response of neurons in the peripheral nervous system and relate this information to the lack of regenerative capacity in the central nervous system. The Cavalli lab also studies satellite glial cells, the cells that completely surround sensory neuron soma. Their role in the nerve repair process has remained largely unknown. Using transgenic mouse models together with a combination of biochemistry, cell biology, in vitro and in vivo imaging techniques and single cell sequencing approaches, the Cavalli lab pursues studies to uncover the molecular and cellular pathways induced by peripheral axon injury and understand how they culminate in the activation of a pro-regenerative program. Using human tissue, we are determining whether the findings made in the mouse model system are relevant to human physiology. Qualifications: Candidates should hold a recent PhD in life sciences with less than 2 years of prior post-doctoral experience and be committed to a career in neuroscience research. Candidates with experience in molecular/cellular neurobiology and/or epigenetics are particularly encouraged to apply. Successful candidates may either participate in ongoing projects and/or develop new independent lines of research related to axon regeneration.
