The Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (Jacobs School) at The State University of New York at Buffalo (University at Buffalo, UB) seeks a new Professor and Chair for the Department of Physiology and Biophysics. Building on the Department’s existing strengths, the Chair is expected to provide the scientific vision and academic leadership that will bring the Department to the next level of excellence. Appropriate resources, including new faculty lines and start-up packages, are available to implement this growth. Faculty lines are twelve month/year state-supported positions.
DEPARTMENT OF PHYSIOLOGY AND BIOPHYSICS: The faculty is a collegial, interactive group that applies modern biochemical principles to a broad range of research areas, which include strengths in the areas of ion channels, skeletal muscle physiology, epithelial cell biology, neurophysiology, vision, and environmental and cardiorespiratory physiology. The 17 faculty members have research expenditures totaling ~$5.7M for FY19; they teach and train graduate and undergraduate students as well as professional students within the Medical, Dental, and Pharmacy Schools.
UB AND JACOBS SCHOOL: UB, SUNY’s comprehensive research campus, has undergone a profound academic growth and transformation under the UB2020 strategic plan (www.buffalo.edu/ub2020). The Jacobs School relocated in 2016/2017 to a new $375M medical school building on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (www.bnmc.org) joining the recently opened Clinical Translational Research Center, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute, the Hunter James Kelly Research Institute, the New York Center of Excellence for Bioinformatics and Life Sciences, the Research Institute on Addictions, and the Center for Excellence in PK/PD. The medical campus includes research cores in genomics, proteomics, microscopy/imaging, macromolecular crystallization, transgenic animals and stem cells. The new chair will have a unique opportunity to significantly shape the Department in this exciting new environment.

A well-funded and internationally recognized program of research in the broadly defined area of Physiology
Outstanding leadership and significant administrative skills to oversee the Department and its teaching programs, to define its scientific vision and overall direction, and to be a public advocate for the Department in the School, the University, and the Western New York region.
