The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine is currently seeking a Research Technician I to join our team of professionals.
Under the Principal Investigator's (PIs) supervision, administers minor animal procedures such as intravenous injection, subcutaneous injection, Intraperitoneal injection, and complex experimental procedures such as stereotaxic injection, anesthesia, animals post-HIV infection husbandry, medications, treatments and collects biological samples.
Provides independent training to technical staff, students, and investigators on the proper handling of research animals and experimental procedures.
Responsible for maintaining log books and animal counts. Responsible for breeding, colony maintenance, tail clipping, genomic DNA extraction and genotyping by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).
Assists department in appropriate animal husbandry procedures.
Ensures bio hazardous and toxic waste is disposed in accordance with environmental safety rules and regulations.
Places orders related with animal experiments, receives and stores materials and supplies, as well as maintains work records.
Interacts with investigators regarding husbandry and health of the animals under their care. Contacts the attending veterinarian to report sick animals.
Performs essential duties in emergencies such as hurricanes, storms, and/or any other university emergency closing. Is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification from a department administrator.
Performs related duties as required or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Bachelor's degree required.
Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of experience.
Extensive experience with a minimum of two years (2) laboratory animal science (mice/rats) experience or equivalent is required.
Previous experience in the handling of Laboratory animals including Animal Biosafety Level 2 (ABSL2) in vivo work.
