A postdoctoral position is available immediately in Dr. Paula Desplats’ laboratory in the Department of Neurosciences, University of California San Diego.
The Desplats lab is interested in understanding epigenetic deregulation that may contribute to adult neurodegenerative disorders. We apply a variety of models ranging from human postmortem brain samples; transgenic mouse models and primary cell lines to understand disease changes and to decipher mechanisms of gene regulation. Our lab has a long-standing trajectory on unraveling disease mechanisms associated with alpha-synuclein missfolding and accumulation (PNAS 2009, 106(31): 13010-5; JBC 2012 287(38): 31691-702), including pioneering epigenetic analysis in Parkinson’s disease (Epigenetics2013, 8(10): 1030). The candidate postdoc will have the opportunity to work primarily in a new exciting project studying the relation between alterations on dynamic DNA methylation and disruption of circadian rhythms and Alzheimer’s disease pathology, extending our recent studies (Alzheimer’s Dement. 2017, 13(6):689-700). The postdoctoral researcher will also have the chance to collaborate in other ongoing projects related Parkinson’s disease, and is expected to contribute to train undergraduate students rotating in the lab.

We are looking for a self-motivated individual with strong creative and critical thinking; detail-oriented and goal-driven researcher who is an exceptional team player.
Recent Ph.D. in neurosciences, molecular or cell biology.
Expertise in transcription and epigenetic analysis.
Experience with mouse models of neurodegeneration is preferred.
Advance skills in tissue culture, including stem cells and primary cell cultures.
A strong record of high-impact peer-reviewed publications is highly desirable.
Very good written and oral communication skills.

Research in our lab is aimed at elucidating the dynamic mechanisms of DNA methylation, which might contribute to onset and progression of the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases of the elderly, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. At the center of our work is a strong interest in translational neuroscience, therefore we combine aspects of cellular physiology and molecular neuroscience, integrating the analysis of human postmortem brain samples, transgenic animals and cellular models to address mechanistic questions, while identifying therapeutic targets and providing novel diagnostic tools.
