The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST; see www.oist.jp) is a dynamic new graduate university of science and technology in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. We offer a platform to develop state-of-the-art research in central nervous control of motor behavior to a highly motivated post-doctoral fellow in the Research Unit of Professor Gordon Arbuthnott. The unit is well equipped for imaging and electrophysiological methods, and OIST encourages open science with access to several advanced physical and computational techniques already in place. We are looking for someone who is organized, creative, and enthusiastic to add rigorous scientific discoveries to our output of new ideas about the brain and behavior.

You will become part of a small team of international researchers working together to try to unravel the details of how the basal ganglia influence behavior. Your individual project will be developed in collaboration with the rest of the team that you can find under Brain Mechanisms for Behaviour Unit at OIST Web site.
A Ph.D. degree from an established Neuroscience group and up to three years postgraduate experience in Neuroscience. We are looking for someone with a record of some publication in English and who can work in an English speaking environment.
A solid background in in vitro and in vivo electrophysiological techniques, functional multicell calcium imaging and use of transgenic-mediated or viral-mediated approaches to study neuronal populations and command of stereotaxic tehniques. Some experimental behavioral work would help but the neurophysiology is the main interest of the group.

Our aim is to understand, at the systems neuroscience level, the mechanisms that allow the brain to control behavioural responses. It now seems likely that the neurotransmitter, dopamine, has a vital role to play in this regard. However, the brain mechanisms underlying the changes in behaviour that can be engendered by training, remain obscure. We use anatomical, physiological, pharmacological and molecular genetic techniques to understand how dopamine acts on neuronal systems to change learning and performance. The endeavour will be a collaborative one involving other scientists at OIST in testing behaviour, in delineating the biology of the neural systems involved, and in developing theoretical models of brain systems capable of modifying behavioural outcomes.
