Applications are invited for the post of Associate Professor of Neuroscience to be held in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics (DPAG) at the University of Oxford. This is a joint appointment with St Peter’s College and Oriel College. The successful candidate will be appointed to a Tutorial Fellowship in Pre-clinical Medicine at St Peter’s College and will also be appointed as a College Lecturer at Oriel College.
DPAG plans to make an appointment in systems neuroscience to complement existing research in the department, as well as research in the Wellcome/Gatsby-funded Centre for Neural Circuits and Behaviour. The department is currently consolidating and expanding its research activities in the field of mammalian integrative neuroscience, with a focus on the formation, organisation, and plasticity of neural circuits that give rise to perception and behaviour. Research groups working in this area will be co-located within the east wing of the Sherrington Building as part of the newly established Centre for Integrative Neuroscience. The new post holder will complement existing world-leading expertise and help to maintain critical mass in the Department in the field of systems neuroscience. With the growing availability of transgenic animal models and sophisticated methods for monitoring and manipulating neural circuits, an appointment in mammalian in vivo neurophysiology is of strategic importance for neuroscience research both within DPAG and elsewhere in the Medical Sciences Division. While we do not wish to limit the candidates we attract to a particular subject area, the fit of candidates to the research profile of the Department and the opportunities for such synergies will be an important selection criterion. We therefore anticipate that the new appointment will be in an area of sensory neuroscience, which is the focus of several current research groups (King, Parker, Molnar, Butt, Krug, Walker, Kohl, Packer).
The successful candidate would get high quality space in the Sherrington Building/Centre for Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology given the realignment of this real estate into the area of neuroscience. The post holder will receive financial assistance in setting up new research activities, and have access to University research support funds (which must be bid for). The Department has a research administration team to help in seeking and applying for grants.

The main duties of this post will be to secure significant external funding and to conduct and manage research projects, through to publication in scholarly journals, participation in international conferences and seminars, and via other media. The post holder will contribute to the Department's Neuroscience teaching to pre-clinical medical students and non-medical students studying Biomedical Sciences (Neuroscience), plus limited MSc teaching in Neuroscience. The post holder will also contribute to college and tutorial teaching and will be expected to supervise graduate research students.
You should have a higher degree (DPhil/PhD) in a relevant area of research, show evidence of excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching, supervision and research training, and a strong, demonstrable commitment to the organisation and delivery of teaching in both Department and Colleges. You will show evidence of substantial independent research accomplishment (e.g., by having secured an independent fellowship from one of the funding organizations) and a strong publication record, as well as evidence of a substantial and realisable research plan that will complement the Department's research strategy. You should also have the ability and willingness to undertake some administrative duties within the Department and the College.
Additional Salary Information: A College Housing Allowance of £8,628 p.a. and other College benefits will also be provided. An allowance of £2,700 p.a. would be made upon award of the title of Full Professor.
