The Department of Pharmacology performs active research in three main areas: cardiac physiology, mechanisms of preterm labor, cell signaling and neuroscience. Moreover, the Department of Pharmacology benefits from the availability of cutting edge core equipment facilities including: a transgenic center, a proteomics core facility, imaging of luciferase reporters in live animals, XF24/XFp Extracellular Flux Analyzers, a FluoView1000 confocal microscope, fluorescence microscopes, electron microscopes, and a a state-of-the-art animal center at the Center for Molecular Medicine.
We are now seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to join a highly motivated research team that is currently investigating the roles of PTEN-induced kinase-1 (PINK1) and Protein Kinase A (PKA) signaling on mitochondrial function, trafficking, neurotrophic signaling and neuronal survival in homeostasis and in models of oxidative stress. Our laboratory uses a number of cell culture and mouse models to understand how the prosurvival serine/threonine kinases PINK1 and PKA interplay at the mitochondria to modulate mitochondrial function during oxidative stress and different aging paradigms. In addition, we are interested in identifying mechanisms of mitochondrial dysfunction and how prosurvival signaling pathways is hampered in neurons during oxidative stress induced in models of Parkinson’s disease. We are looking forward to working with a highly motivated individual who can collaborate with other P.I.s within the Department of Physiology and Cell Biology and who can bring a high level of technical and intellectual expertise to the Department of Pharmacology.
The postdoctoral appointment is supported by a five-year NIH/R01 grant. The appointment is good for up to four consecutive years and is contingent upon excellent research progress.
Our ideal candidate should have a PhD in Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Neuroscience or in any other field related to the biomedical sciences. In addition, the candidate should have a strong publication record, possess good communication skills, be highly proficient in handling small vertebrate animals (mice and rats), be able to perform immunocytochemistry, brain immunohistochemistry, and be able to perform phosphoproteomic techniques (e.g. LC MS/MS). Preferably, we are looking for a candidate who is familiar with performing mitochondrial respiration and functional assays. The ideal candidate is willing to travel twice a year to present his/her research at national and regional conferences, attend career development workshops, contribute to grant writing, be able to publish peer-reviewed research manuscripts, attend career development workshops ,and learn new proteomics techniques at off-campus training sites.
