A post-doctoral fellowship is available in the laboratory of Prakash Kara. We use multi-photon imaging and two-photon optogenetics to study visual processing in the primary visual cortex. We assay synaptic and spiking activity along with the responses of individual blood vessels to sensory stimuli and optogenetic activation. The ultimate goals of our currently funded projects are to (1) resolve aspects of neural coding of binocular signals, (2) determine the underpinnings of fMRI using rodent and non-rodent animal model systems, and (3) build microcircuits for neurovascular coupling across brain regions and species.
My laboratory has relocated to the University of Minnesota (in the city of Minneapolis) as part of a new Medical Discovery Team (MDT) program in Optical Imaging and Brain Science that will eventually have five independent laboratories using multi-photon imaging to examine circuit-based approaches to brain function.
In addition to conventional two-photon imaging, we are installing systems for meososcopic three-photon imaging that spans several millimeters across the necortex and through the depths of all layers into the neocortex.
Team members in the Kara lab interact with the lab of Thomas Naselaris (at MUSC) on computational models and members of the Center for Magnetic Resonance Research at the University of Minnesota where ultra high field fMRI (up to 16.4T) will be performed on the same subjects used for multi-photon imaging in the Kara lab.
PhD in Neuroscience, Physics, or Engineering. The ideal candidate will have prior research experience in neuroscience, fluorescence microscopy and/or electrophysiological recording in vivo, and quantitative analytical skills. Candidates must be highly motivated, have good interpersonal and organizational skills, and be prepared to work within and across interactive laboratory environments.
