A postdoctoral position is available immediately for self-motivated researchers interested neurophysiology and central neural circuits responsible for normal cardiorespiratory and autonomic function and maladaptive plasticity in these circuits in response to stress. Selected individuals will join the NIH-funded collaborative in vivo and in vitro research of Dr. Kevin J. Cummings and Dr. David D. Kline at the Dalton Cardiovascular Research Center, University of Missouri. Funded research projects investigate the function of neurons in the hypothalamus (e.g. CRH, oxytocin, orexin neurons) and brainstem (serotonin, catecholaminergic neurons) in the central regulation of breathing, sympathetic nerve activity and blood pressure under normal conditions and in response to acute and chronic hypoxia. We are seeking candidates that have experience in or are seeking to learn in vivo rodent measurements, including conscious chronically instrumented animals, in vivo CNS microinjections, single- and multi-unit brainstem neuron or peripheral nerve recordings, photometry, as well as manipulation of these neurons and central pathways via chemo- and optogenetics. Ideally, the successful applicant will have expertise in one or more of these approaches as well as an intense interest in central autonomic regulation and a desire to broaden their expertise. Candidates must have a PhD, MD or comparable doctoral degree. Prior training in neuroscience, cardiovascular and/or respiratory regulation is highly desirable.  Salary commensurate with experience and NIH guidelines.

Interested individuals should send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and the names of three references via email to Kevin J. Cummings (cummingske@missouri.edu).  The University of Missouri is an equal opportunity employer.
