OVERVIEW 

The Chair will provide strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the Department and is responsible for its personnel, administrative, educational, and research/scholarly operations. The next leader for the Department will establish innovative curricular, training, and research programs to lead the Department to a position of academic and professional eminence while furthering the goals and missions of the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. The chair is expected to promote team science both within the Department and in collaboration with other departments at the Miller School of Medicine and the University of Miami.  

 

Serving as a leader for the Department, the Chair will represent the Department at various functions with UHealth, School of Medicine and the external community. He/she will work closely with the other Department chairs, the School of Medicine leadership team, and the faculty governance structure to provide a rich and innovative scientific environment for faculty, staff and trainees to further knowledge in the basic sciences and promote its ultimate translation to the clinic. The individual in this position is expected to serve as a role model for the faculty, in addition to his or her administrative responsibilities. 

 

The following represent key opportunities and expectations for the new Chair of Physiology, Biophysics, and Cell Biology to address within the first 18-24 months of his/her tenure. They are not listed in any particular order of priority. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES, GOALS, AND OBJECTIVES 

Education 

  • Support strong educational and training opportunities to attract outstanding graduate students and postdoctoral fellows 

  • Collaborate with the Executive Dean for Education and Policy to support the undergraduate medical education curriculum, NextGenMD. 
     

Scholarship and Research 

  • Lead significant expansion of the Department's scholarship and research productivity and increase the amount of externally sponsored research, especially from the federal government. 

  • Provide a supportive environment and infrastructure that fosters research excellence. 

  • Provide mentoring to early stage and mid-career faculty to help guide their research efforts and career trajectories. 

 

Community Engagement 

  • Establish close relationships with community partners and identify opportunities for community engagement. 

 

Engage and Lead a Distinguished Faculty 

  • Recruit, nurture, and retain outstanding faculty members with a commitment to inclusive excellence.  

  • Establish rapport with the faculty and build an esprit de corps that encompasses their varied research and academic interests. Align the faculty with the goals of the Department and School of Medicine. 

  • Establish a culture that makes the Department a sought-after destination for trainees to begin their careers.

CANDIDATE PROFILE 

The ideal candidate for this role will be an accomplished researcher and mentor who can build an environment that engages and motivates others to work in concert to achieve scientific excellence. 

 

REQUIREMENTS 

Education: 
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree required. 
 

Experience: 
Minimum 10 years of relevant experience. 
 

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes: 

  • Ability to establish department goals, objectives and vision in support of an ambitious and achievable strategic plan. 

  • Ability to lead, motivate, develop and inspire others. 

  • Ability to develop and evaluate metrics of a successful department  

  • Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.
