POSTDOCTORAL SCHOLAR POSITION OPEN IN THE LABORATORY OF DEBRA ANN FADOOL AT FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY

A postdoctoral position is available on an NIH-supported mechanism in the Chemical Senses at Florida State University (FSU) in the laboratory of Debra Ann Fadool to investigate the neuromodulation of ion channels and the disruption of olfactory sensory signaling and circuitry attributed to diabetes and obesity.  Current research focus is to investigate the impact of metabolic disorders (obesity/diabetes) on chemosensory function, behavior, and physiology and uses a combinatorial, multidisciplinary approach. We are seeking a creative, self-motivated individual who has strong experimental experiences and the drive to pursue challenging, rigorous studies in the chemical senses. Experimental approaches employed in the laboratory include slice electrophysiology, whole-nerve recording, optogenetic and chemogenetic recording, behavioral phenotyping, ion channel structure/function studies, viral track tracing, protein- protein interactions, whole-animal metabolic phenotyping, tissue culture, psychophysical studies of sensory-mediated behaviors, confocal microscopy, olfactometry, and genetically- modified mouse models.  We are seeking an individual that has a background in membrane biophysics and preferred experience in slice electrophysiology, stereotaxic surgery, gut-brain interactions, obesity/metabolism, neuroendocrinology, and/or experimental use of cre-dependent mouse models.  This individual would also have the opportunity to collaborate on studies exploring GLP-1 agonist effects during perinatal development and changes in related olfactory function.

Debra Ann Fadool is the director of Postdoctoral Training at FSU and provides substantial individual as well as institutional professional development training for postdocs.  In addition to a guided research training experience, postdocs should expect training in mentorship,  grantsmanship, academic instruction, work-life balance, oral communication, peer review processes, scientific writing, job interviewing/negotiation, and critical thinking.

Minimum Qualifications: Only applicants who meet the following qualifications will be considered for the position:
    *    Doctorate (MD and/or Ph.D. in medicine, biology, psychology, neuroscience, physiology, cell or molecular biology) is required.
*    Recent Ph.D.s are preferred.
    *    Applicant should demonstrate published expertise in one or more of the experimental approaches and strong long-term career ambition as a research scientist in the discipline of Chemical Senses, Ingestive Behavior, or Obesity/Metabolism.
*    Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY:
Florida State University is a Research Intensive I Institution in the capital of Florida, and has been recognized as a preeminent training ground for scientists in the discipline of Chemical Senses. Candidate will join a vibrant community of researchers studying Sensory Systems within the Program in Neuroscience, that includes faculty from the Departments of Psychology, Biological Science, and the College of Medicine, as well as interdisciplinary programs in Molecular Biophysics, Computational Science and Molecular Biology. Our postdoctoral fellows gain value added training in professional aspects such as academic leadership roles, grant writing, mentorship of junior laboratory members, teaching, job interview/negotiation skills, oral presentation, and historical/modern experimental design for chemical senses research programs. Florida State has a committed Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (http://opda.fsu.edu/) with an engaged PDA (http://opda.fsu.edu/pda-representitives) that drives a supportive postdoctoral community. Research for this postdoctoral scholar position will be conducted in state of the art building facilities that were opened in 2008. The institute supports fully staffed DNA, microarray, analytical chemistry, imaging, hybridoma, viral, and instrument/engineering design core facilities as well as technical support staff including scientific editor, departmental artist, and machine/carpentry/electrical  staff.

Applications:  Review of applications will commence August 1, 2024  until filled. The position is available August 15, 2024 with an absolute start date prior to January 31, 2025.  Applications should submit (SINGLE PDF) a letter of application explicitly addressing the qualifications for this position; paragraph describing their long-term career goals; detailed curriculum vitae; example publications; and the names, email, and addresses for three professional references to:
