Staff Scientist 1

The National Institute on Aging (NIA), Intramural Research Program (IRP), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is recruiting for a Staff Scientist 1 in the Comparative Medicine Section (CMS) located in Baltimore, MD. The incumbent will be supervised by the Animal Program Director of the CMS and will provide support for the animal research program in the IRP. Additionally, the incumbent will be involved in the preparation for the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) International re-evaluation visit, and the semi-annual Animal Care & Use Committee (ACUC) facility inspections.

The Staff Scientist will support a wide variety of scientific studies on aging, while managing numerous trainings and surgery classes for the scientific staff. Trainings will include animal handling, animal anesthesia, basic introductory surgery classes, advanced general surgery classes and brain and/or stereotaxic surgery classes in a variety of species. The incumbent will also assist with the day-to-day clinical veterinary operations of the NIA IRP vivarium in Baltimore. The incumbent will occasionally be responsible for experimental surgery as required by the needs of IRP research protocols. In addition, the Staff Scientist will be responsible for consulting and collaborating with IRP laboratories on animal study proposal design and providing technical support to Investigators and trainees. Extensive experience with rodents and rabbits is preferred and nonhuman primate experience is also valued. Experience in animal models of aging and age-related diseases in a variety of species is preferred.

A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (or equivalent degree) with specialty training and experience in laboratory animal medicine is required. Board certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) is preferred and veterinarian licensing in the United States is required.

Staff Scientists do not receive independent resources, although they often work independently and have sophisticated skills and knowledge essential to the work of the Section. Although this Staff Scientist will be supervised by the Animal Program Director of the CMS, they will be interacting with scientists from the NIA IRP, other NIH Institutes, and the scientific community at large.
