Department of Physiology, University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson

The Position and the Department

The Department of Physiology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson warmly invites you to apply for tenure-eligible or tenured faculty positions.  Multiple positions are available.  We are particularly interested in applications for assistant professor positions but are open to applications for all ranks.  We seek applicants who have an outstanding track record in research as demonstrated by high-impact publications and extramural funding.  Top candidates include those whose research programs complement our existing areas of strengths (see below), however, we also welcome strong applicants in any area of biomedical research to join us and establish new areas of focus in the Department.

Our department has a broad and robust research portfolio.  Our faculty members are principal investigators on NIH P01, U01, RC2, T32, and R01 grants as well as grants from other funding agencies.  The Department provides outstanding scientific platforms with active research being conducted in human subjects, non-human primates, rodent models, and human induced pluripotent stem cells.  Department faculty possess leading expertise in cutting-edge approaches ranging from multi-omics and big data analysis to imaging, electrophysiology, and tissue and whole organism physiology.  Our department houses several programs that serve as incubators for research development and collaboration across the university and beyond.  These programs include the Program for Translational Multi-Omics, Program for Visceral and Interoceptive System Physiology (VISP), Program for Kidney Health and Disease (PKHD), Program for Hypertension Research, and Program for Molecular Investigations of Neurovascular Disorders (MIND).  Our department is committed to supporting its faculty members to lead or participate in large-scale, team-science, programmatic research that addresses major challenges in biological, biomedical, and medical sciences.

Our department is highly unique among departments in medical schools across the country in that we are home to an undergraduate major.  Our Undergraduate Major in Physiology and Medical Sciences is one of the largest majors at our university.  More than 5,500 students enroll in our undergraduate courses each year.  The undergraduate program provides unique and powerful support for research in the Department.  In addition, department faculty participate in several campus-wide graduate programs and contribute to medical education.

The faculty in the Department collaborate with investigators from across the university and the world.  Ample opportunities exist for interaction with other investigators through participation in numerous institutes and centers at the College of Medicine, UA Health Sciences, and the university.  In addition, department faculty enjoy ready access to extensive and excellent core facilities across the university, many of which are in proximity with the Department.  For more information about institutes, centers, and cores, please see

The Department places a strong emphasis on peer mentoring to enhance the success of all faculty members, especially junior faculty members.  We value a collaborative and collegial environment in which all members of the Department strive for excellence.
