______
We have two exciting opportunities for highly motivated postdoctoral researchers to join the newly established Harris Lab.
The Harris Lab is interested in one of Biology’s biggest mysteries - why do brains need to sleep? We investigate single cell and neural circuit changes during sleep, with a focus on how these changes impact both neural computation and energy use, allowing us to wake up each morning with brains that are increasingly optimised for our environment. We work with mice, using a combination of electrophysiological and optogenetic techniques alongside olfactory behavioural paradigms to study changes in learning, memory and sensory processing across arousal states.
Candidates wishing to be considered for a grade 8 post should have experience of supervising a small team of scientists and/or PhD students. Please specify in your application which grade you would like to be considered for.
Post 1
The role will involve performing large-scale electrophysiological experiments in rodents across periods of awake behaviour and sleep. You will be responsible for introducing optogenetics into the existing experimental framework. Using olfactory stimuli, you will also have the opportunity to contribute to the development of novel behavioural tasks to examine neural and behavioural changes before and after sleep. You will collaborate closely with theorists in the Gatsby Unit and draw on the experimental resources of multiple labs at SWC and the broader neuroscience community at UCL and beyond. This post is available for one year in the first instance.
You should have experience with in vivo electrophysiology or optogenetics (or both). You will have excellent communication skills with the ability to write for publication and present research proposals. A dedication to teamwork and collaboration are essential along with strong organisational skills.

Post 2
The role will comprise to key aspects:
1) You will develop a custom area for chronic neuropixels, recordings and sleep.
2) You will work directionally with the SWC’s central behavioural arena, both analysing existing data and involve a high level of collaboration with other SWC labs, as well as with SWC’s expert engineering and neuroinformatics teams.
You will also have the opportunity to collaborate closely with theorists in the Gatsby Unit and draw on the experimental resources of multiple labs at SWC, the broader neuroscience community at UCL and beyond.
You should have experience with in vitro or in vivo electrophysiology or sleep recording. You will have excellent communication skills with the ability to write for publication and present research proposals. A dedication to teamwork and collaboration are essential along with strong organisational skills.
