Open Rank: Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor - Animal Models of Mental Health and Addiction, Psychology

About the Opportunity

About the Opportunity:

The College of Science at Northeastern University invites applications for positions at all ranks (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor), beginning in academic year 2024-2025 in the field of Animal Models of Mental Health and Addiction, broadly defined. Primary appointments will be in Psychology with joint appointments in other departments including Biology and/or the Bouve College of Health Sciences. Appointments will have the opportunity to collaborate in cross-disciplinary teams across the University and will complement existing strengths.

The College comprises six departments: Biology, Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Marine and Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology. Cross-disciplinary research programs and appointments are strongly encouraged within the College, and across the University.

Mental illness and substance misuse are widespread public health problems whose neurobiological causes remain elusive. The behavioral neuroscience research programs in our department work in animal models to reveal neurocircuit-based, neuroimmunological, and neurodevelopmental mechanisms underpinning individual differences in behaviors within the realms of fear, anxiety, risk-taking, and cognition. We are seeking colleagues conducting complementary research using state-of-the-art approaches to investigate neural circuits and signaling processes that mediate behavioral outcomes related to stress, addiction, and mental health. Inquiries may be directed to the chair of the search committee, Dr. Rebecca Shansky, mailto:r.shansky@northeastern.edu

The Department of Psychology is strongly interdisciplinary, with 26 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 18 non-tenure-track teaching faculty, and 5 additional faculty with joint appointments in Music, Computer Sciences, Political Science and Communication Sciences and Disorders. In addition to internationally recognized efforts in psychological, cognitive and brain health with a focus on translational and intervention investigation, research in the Department of Psychology spans numerous other disciplines that are central to human health and wellbeing across the lifespan, including developmental and aging neuroscience, brain-body interactions, animal models, language processing, reasoning, social cognition, visual processing and impairment. The Department of Psychology administers or co-administers programs in Psychology and Behavioral Neuroscience for over 2,000 undergraduates, and it trains 60 students in PhDs programs. Under new leadership, the College of Science, and the Department of Psychology are in a vibrant expansion phase.
