Department of Neurobiology

Assistant Professor of Instruction in Neuroscience

Northwestern University’s Department of Neurobiology invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure-eligible faculty appointment as Assistant Professor of Instruction, beginning September 1, 2024. This is a long-term, teaching-track position with faculty voting rights and a defined pathway to promotion.

The Department of Neurobiology is home to the Neuroscience Major, which is housed in Northwestern University’s Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.  Within the Department of Neurobiology, all tenured, tenure-track, and teaching-track faculty teach at least one course for the Neuroscience Major, which is a thriving undergraduate program that graduates approximately 100 majors per year. Classes in the Neuroscience Major include 100-level introductory courses for non-majors, 200-level introductory courses for majors, and a wide range of 300-level electives.  Duties of the successful applicant would include six undergraduate courses per academic year (for example, two courses in the Fall, two in the Winter, and two in the Spring quarter), or the equivalent in student advising for the Neuroscience major.

Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in Neuroscience or a related field, which must be conferred by September 1, 2024. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated excellence, breadth, and innovation in teaching, and whose primary career interest is in undergraduate education.

Applications should be submitted electronically at https://neurobiology.northwestern.edu/people/faculty-openings/ and should include: (1) a cover letter, (2) a curriculum vitae, (3) a detailed teaching statement (recommended length: 2-3 pages) (4) copies of course syllabi and evaluations, and (5) contact information for three references, at least two of which can discuss the candidate's teaching qualifications. Inquiries may be sent to: neurobiofacsearch@northwestern.edu.

The Department of Neurobiology is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive academic community. Candidates are welcome to describe within their teaching statement how their experiences and approaches around diversity and inclusion inform their approach to teaching and advising.

Review of application materials will begin on October 31, 2023, and will continue until the position is filled.
