Basic Neuroscientist
University Tenure Line or University Medical Line
The Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford is seeking a basic science research faculty member specializing in basic or translational scholarly research whose programs emphasize neuroscience topics which could include pain, sensory systems, aging, cognition, neuroimmunology, substance use disorders, neuromodulation or perioperative recovery. This position is at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor in the University Tenure Line or University Medical Line.
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. and/or M.D. and display scientific creativity and promise as investigators with outstanding performance, or promise for outstanding performance, as the leader of a lab-based research group, teacher and mentor. Preference for proven ability to obtain external funding.
The ideal candidate would be highly collaborative and leverage our existing strengths as well as other Stanford resources to develop a field-leading program. It is expected that this program will create training opportunities for students, residents, fellows and junior faculty. The recruitment of a highly qualified neuroscientist or clinician-neuroscientist with a strong basic science focus would enhance the impact of our research efforts and create bridges to other Stanford neuroscience programs.
This position is primarily a research position focused on making discoveries that transform the fields of anesthesiology, perioperative and pain medicine (broadly defined) and to train the next generation of leaders in neuroscience. The Department has a great tradition of active and diverse research encompassing laboratory, translational and clinical project areas across all sub-specialties in the field.
Faculty rank and line will be determined by the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. Assigned clinical responsibilities, if any, will be determined by the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate
- The predominant criteria for appointment in the University Tenure Line is a major commitment to research and teaching.
- The major criteria for appointment for faculty in the University Medical Line shall be excellence in the overall mix of clinical care, clinical teaching, and scholarly activity that advances clinical medicine and institutional service appropriate to the programmatic need the individual is expected to fulfill.
Clinical responsibilities, if assigned, will require MD/DO, PhD or international equivalent, board certified or equivalent anesthesiologist and eligible for a California license or exemption.

Salary Range:
This role is open to candidates with varying degrees. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be based on their degree(s) and/or clinical duties. The expected base pay range for likely degrees with no clinical duties, are listed below. Interested candidates who are interested in working clinically as an anesthesiologist or whose degree is not listed below, please contact the hiring department for the salary range specific to including clinical work or to their degree.
PhD only:
Assistant Professor: $177,000 - $195,000
Associate Professor: $209,000 – $233,000
Professor: $255,000 - $355,000
MD/PhD:
Assistant Professor: $184,000 - $202,000
Associate Professor: $212,000 - $236,000
Professor: $253,000 - $313,000
This pay range reflects base pay, which is based on faculty rank and years in rank. It may not include all components of faculty compensation or pay from participation in departmental incentive compensation programs.
