A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Jamie Peters, in the Department of Neurobiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Heersink School of Medicine. The postdoc will have the opportunity to participate in projects aimed at understanding the neurobiological effects of psychedelic drugs and psychedelic-like compounds. We are interested in using psychedelic-derived drugs as potential therapeutics for substance use disorder and use preclinical animal models of the disease to screen novel psychedelic candidate drugs. We will also identify the receptor mechanism(s) of action in brain and the neural circuits and systems whereby the therapeutic effects of these agents are manifested. Relevant laboratory techniques include intravenous self-administration behavioral models, opto- and chemo-genetics, fiber photometry, and slice electrophysiology.
Postdoc duties include:
Planning and executing experiments with minimal supervision
Mentoring and training junior lab personnel
Collecting, analyzing, and interpreting scientific data
Preparing graphs, figures, and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals
Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Physiology, or related field is required by the date of employment.
Addiction biology or behavioral neuroscience
Opportunity for training in self-administration behavioral models, optogenetics/ chemogenetics, and/or fiber photometry is available, although prior experience in one of these domains is preferred.
Experience with viral vectors and/or willingness to work at Biosafety Level 2
Proficiency in stereotaxic surgery
In vitro slice electrophysiology
