Assistant Professor – Visual Perception/Clinical Psychophysics/Optics/Ocular Disease/Biology and Therapeutics

The Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of California, Berkeley seeks diverse applicants for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank in vision research.  Candidates should have a PhD, OD, MD, or equivalent international degree(s). Preference will be given to candidates with both research and clinical training.  The successful applicant will demonstrate potential for exceptional clinical and basic research achievements as well as excellence in teaching in both the professional (Doctor of Optometry) and graduate (PhD program in Vision Science) curricula. Applicants should have the potential to establish strong collaborations at the local, national, and global level.

The negotiable start date is January 1, 2024 or July 1, 2024.

Our goal is to recruit an outstanding colleague with strong interests in any area that pertains to basic and clinical vision science, including but not limited to bioinformatic approaches, computational modeling, visual optics, psychophysics, visual neuroscience, ocular disease and/or diagnostics, and the application of data science to the visual system.

The Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry and Vision Science has several clinical facilities that serve a large diverse patient population, a clinical research center, and many laboratories in the Vision Science graduate program conducting research in optics, ocular biology, translational and clinical research, molecular and cell biology, perception, neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and computational vision. The successful candidate will also have opportunities to be considered for membership in other programs across the UC Berkeley campus, including the Berkeley Institute for Data Science, Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute, Redwood Center for Theoretical Neuroscience, the Center for Emerging and Neglected Diseases, and the Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics. Current faculty also enjoy collaborations and/or joint appointments with the Departments of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Computer Science, Molecular and Cell Biology, Psychology, Chemistry, multiple divisions within the School of Public Health, and the Department of Ophthalmology at UCSF.
