Position Focus:

The Wu Tsai Institute is an interdisciplinary neuroscience initiative at Yale University founded in 2021 with the mission to understand human cognition and explore human potential. Marking a strategic, cross-university investment by Yale, the Institute unites researchers, departments, and schools at 100 College Street, the Institute's home once it opens in summer 2023. The Institute stimulates research across disciplines such as biology, cognitive science, computer science, data science, engineering, neuroscience and psychology through funding mechanisms and access to state-of-the-art technology and resources. The Institute advances integrative and inclusive approaches to science through its fellowships and programming for faculty, students, and postdoctoral researchers across the Yale community.

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Manager of Student and Postdoctoral Programs at the Wu Tsai Institute oversees and runs the Institute's programs for postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduates. Current programs include the Wu Tsai Postdoctoral Fellowships, the Wu Tsai Graduate Fellowships, and the Wu Tsai Summer Scholars. The incumbent is responsible for the overall execution and day-to-day administration of existing programs. The incumbent will oversee the growth of new programming targeted the broader community of undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers at Yale whose interdisciplinary research interests align with the Institute. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that current and future Wu Tsai programs for graduate students and postdocs stimulate the interdisciplinary research and training of scientists at diverse career stages while also promoting an inclusive science environment.

Key responsibilities and programming areas: coordinates across schools and departments for the full cycle of recruiting, appointing, and reviewing of trainees; works within program budgets to achieve maximum impact and return on investment; develops and utilizes metrics to evaluate programs; in consultation with the Institute leadership, helps define and implement the priorities and strategic direction of the programs to align with the Institute's mission; works with Assistant Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion on overall program design; collaborates with the Communications Manager to develop marketing plans and outreach materials; in consultation with staff and faculty, develops and delivers professional development content in line with programmatic goals of the Institute and intentional practices of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties:

1. Oversees the advancement and growth of the program. Gives direction and leadership supporting the philosophy, mission, strategy, and annual goals and objectives. Assumes primary accountability for disseminating and publishing all program information to create public awareness and support of the program. 2. Works closely with leadership, internal and external colleagues, and community residents to further develop and implement strategic plans. 3. Identifies, solicits, and cultivates community partnerships and collaborations to assist in the development and growth of the program. Develops the metrics to identify and measure the success of the program. Responsible for measurements of grant success and related evaluation. 4. Assists in identifying and evaluating potential future funding sources, and contributes to the submission of grants and contracts supporting the program, including the annual submission and writing of all content areas and budgetary sections of grant applications. Develops and manages the program’s operating budget. 5. Develops the administrative infrastructure of the program. Manages human resource and administrative functions of the program, including staffing and hiring, supervision, performance development, counseling and discipline, if warranted. Oversees and manages information systems, facilities, and space needs. 6. Investigates, identifies, implements, and oversees the maintenance of systems to gather, track, and report information to support the initiatives of the program. Tracks all program activities and regularly informs leadership of progress on each initiative. Recommends structural or programmatic adjustments, changes or additions based on full knowledge of missions, goals, and objectives. 7. Initiates, designs, and manages the compilation of program communications; identifying outreach potential, and promoting philanthropic and collaborative support of the program. Contributes to the development and assists in the management of content on the program’s website and monitors all changes and additions to the editorial content. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in a related field and four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated ability in program design and delivery in an academic environment; familiarity with postdoc and/or student affairs; experience with relevant best practices of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with staff, faculty, administrators, students, and other program participants, stakeholders, and partners. Able to work with people of different backgrounds in culturally aware and responsive ways.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated ability to manage and collect data related to evaluation, metrics, and reporting; experience managing a budget; experience preparing reports, surveys, spreadsheets, presentations.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Demonstrated ability to set and manage priorities in a dynamic environment with evolving needs; experience with managing complex projects, setting timelines, and hitting deadlines; advanced MS Office skills.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and within a team, taking a proactive, creative, and flexible approach to program development and problem solving.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Advanced degree and/or research experience in a field related to the mission of the Institute.
