The Army Research Laboratory (ARL) Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to pursue independent research that supports the mission of ARL. The Fellow benefits by having this opportunity and by working alongside some of the nation's best scientists and engineers. ARL benefits by the expected transfer of new science and technology that enhances the capabilities of the U.S. Army and the warfighter in times of both peace and war.
The Army Research Laboratory invites exceptional early career researchers to participate in this excitement as ARL Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellows. These Fellows must display extraordinary ability in scientific research and show clear promise of becoming outstanding future leaders. Candidates are expected to have already successfully tackled a major scientific or engineering problem during their thesis work or to have provided a new approach or insight, evidenced by a recognized impact in their field.
ARL offers five named Fellowships honoring distinguished researchers and work that has been performed at Army Labs. Applications are currently being accepted for up to two of these fellowships:
- the Harry Diamond Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship
- the George F. Adams Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship
- the Robert J. Eichelberger Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship
- the ENIAC Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship
- the Brad E. Forch Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship

- Paid relocation and professional travel allowance

The NRC Research Associateship Programs (RAP) promote excellence in scientific and technological research conducted by the U.S. government through the administration of programs offering graduate, postdoctoral, and senior level research opportunities at sponsoring federal laboratories and affiliated institutions. In the NRC Research Associateship Programs, prospective applicants select a research project or projects from among a large group of Research Opportunities available through this website. Prior to completing an application, prospective applicants should contact the Research Adviser listed with the selected Research Opportunity(ies) to assure that funding will be available if the application is recommended by NRC Research Associateship Programs panels. Once a host laboratory and Research Adviser are identified, an application is submitted through the NRC Research Associateship Programs online application system. Reviews are conducted four times each year, and review results are available to applicants six to eight weeks following the application deadline. Prospective applicants should carefully read the details and eligibility of the program to which they are applying. Some laboratories have citizenship restrictions (open only to U.S. citizens and permanent residents), and some laboratories have Research Opportunities that are not open to senior applicants (more than 5 years beyond the Ph.D.). When searching for Research Opportunities, applicants may limit their search to only those laboratories which match their eligibility criteria. In addition, applicants should note application deadlines, as not all laboratories participate in all reviews.
