Position Title: Alzheimer’s Disease Research: Biomarkers, Neuroimaging, Omics, Cognition (Human Research) 

Position Description:

We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow to join the Multimodal Imaging of Neurodegenerative Disease (MIND) Unit and/or Brain Aging and Behavior Section within the National Institute on Aging’s (NIA’s) Laboratory of Behavioral Neuroscience. This is a full-time primary research fellowship for a postdoctoral scholar interested in pursuing a career in Alzheimer’s disease and brain aging research. Postdoctoral fellows will be mentored by Dr. Keenan Walker and Dr. Susan Resnick and will be expected to develop original research projects focused on understanding the pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, and identifying novel fluid and neuroimaging biomarkers for these conditions.


Fellows will have the opportunity to use neuroimaging, cognitive, clinical, proteomic, metabolomic, and genetic data from multiple large cohort studies, including the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA), Women’s Health Initiative Memory Study (WHIMS), and the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study, to generate impactful research relevant to neurodegenerative disease and brain aging. Fellows will have the opportunity to collaborate with NIH and non-NIH investigators and participate in ongoing research initiatives within and outside the Laboratory of Behavioral Neuroscience. Fellows will have the option to participate in aspects of neuroimaging and cognitive data collection, but will be expected to focus primarily on generating original research and disseminating these findings via peer-reviewed manuscripts and scientific presentation(s) at national and international conferences.


Training: Research training includes active participation in weekly multidisciplinary lab meetings, clinical and neuropathological case conferences, Clinical Neuroscience Grand Rounds, and professional development and research methods courses offered through the NIH Office of Intramural Training and Education (OITE). Fellows are also encouraged to take advantage of the neurology/neuroscience seminars and research methods courses offered at the Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences (FAES).


Qualifications: The successful candidate must have a PhD, MD, DVM, or equivalent doctoral degree, and interest and experience with neuroimaging, omics (genetics/proteomics), epidemiology, or cognition research. Candidates must be on track to complete doctoral degree requirements before the start of the fellowship (September 2023 at the latest). Experience with R, SAS, STATA, Python, or other statistical computing software is required.


Compensation: Salary is consistent with NIH guidelines and benefits include health, dental and vision insurances, paid time-off, and conference time. The duration of postdoctoral fellowship appointments can be for up to five years.
