The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences (GW SMHS) seeks to recruit an exceptional individual with scientific achievements in translational and clinical neurosciences, leadership skills, and teaching skills for a tenured position in the Anatomical Sciences to serve as Chair of the Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology. The Department has distinguished research and teaching faculty who are national and international leaders in their respective fields. Faculty research areas encompass four broad areas: neural cell biology, neurotherapeutics, cancer cell biology, and medical/health sciences education. At the community scale, faculty collaborate with peers in SMHS, GW Hospital, and the GW community, in a hub connecting fundamental and translational research with clinical research to investigate topics such as neurological diseases, neurogenetic disorders, and blood, breast, lung, pancreatic, prostate and skin cancers. In addition to research, the Department supports the training of future healthcare professionals, health educators, and scientists through several programs, including our Undergraduate Anatomy Minor, two Pre- Medicine Graduate Programs in the Anatomical and Translational Sciences, and the Institute for Biomedical Sciences (IBS).

As the anatomical sciences are essential for healthcare careers, our faculty play a critical role in the development and administration of medical and health science courses that are heavily dependent upon gross anatomy, embryology, histology, and neuroanatomy. Unique among the other basic science departments at the SMHS, the Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology has dedicated physical space and/or technology to support gross anatomy and histology laboratory teaching.

The GW SMHS is committed to building a culturally diverse faculty and strongly encourages applications from candidates from backgrounds underrepresented in science.

Responsibilities: The Chair’s responsibilities include but are not limited to maintaining an active, externally-funded research program;  providing management and leadership to the department; overseeing the department’s research centers and collaborative research partnerships; participating in and coordinating the educational programs of the department; and engaging in service to the School and University. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must be nationally and internationally-recognized scientists with an exemplary record of extramurally funded research in a research area aligned with the focus of the department. A Ph.D. in an appropriate field and/or an M.D. is required. Applicants must also possess the background and experience that have prepared them to lead the department in fulfilling its research agenda and educational responsibilities and the skills needed to build relationships with various partners of the GW Medical Enterprise and interface with GW Research Centers and Programs.

To Apply: Please complete the online application at https://www.gwu.jobs/postings/97696 and upload a CV and cover letter and the names and contact information for at least three professional references. Review of applications will begin on December 6, 2022, and continue until the position is filled. Only complete applications will be considered.
