University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics: We work with neurosurgery patients at the renowned UIHC to study Cognitive system impact, compensation and plasticity, jointly funded by the NIH, Dept of Neurosurgery and Iowa Neuroscience Institute. The goal of our neurosurgery patient research is to directly assist medical science by providing cutting-edge insights on neuronal mechanisms, circuits and networks that support cognition.
The research focuses on auditory and multisensory cognitive processes involving frontal, hippocampal and sensory cortex. We use advanced neurophysiological and neuroimaging approaches, and we conduct causal manipulations with electrical, infra-red neuromodulation or transcranial focused ultrasound to manipulate neural circuits. Our objective is to determine how neurosurgical treatment impacts on the cognitive system and how neurons across brain layers immediately compensate to preserve learning, memory and language function.
Powerful International Collaboration: The work is complemented by the laboratory segment in Newcastle University, UK working to directly translate approaches from an animal model to the benefit of neurosurgery patient research at the University of Iowa, USA.
The role: We are seeking to flexibly appoint at a level depending on the strength and experience of the candidate: a Post-Doctoral Group Leader role or Laboratory Manager to support and grow the research team. The role will involve coordinating and supporting the neurosurgery patient research team, including testing patients and the analysis and reporting of single neuron responses, laminar recordings and electrical, infra-red or ultrasound brain perturbation of the fronto-temporal system in humans.
Candidates for this position should have a strong academic record, leadership experience and relevant experience, including strong analytical, presenting and writing skills. A PhD is necessary for the Group Leader role, but not for the Lab Manager role. The ideal candidate will have skill working with patients under pressure, an eye for detail and ability to work well independently to achieve goals and as part of the team they have the opportunity to inspire and lead. Strong analytical skills are essential particularly for the Group Leader role.
