Detailed description:

The Barbas Neural Systems Lab includes a diverse group of researchers, ranging from undergraduate students to postdoctoral and research fellows; the lab is of medium size (7-10) ensuring close interaction in a positive, interacting and respectful environment of equity and inclusion.  Our research focuses on neural circuits associated with emotion, cognition and memory in primates, including work with postmortem human brains with neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases. We use cutting edge methods to label neural circuits and features from the system to the synapse.

Job description: The Lab Manager will be expected to learn and manage equipment and lab safety; coordinate project schedules and workflow, and provide some oversight of undergraduate researchers.

Essential responsibilities: Learn various assays to label brain sections and gain competence in the operation of work-stations to transfer data from slides to a computer; learn methods needed for processing tissue to view in the electron microscope (EM) and use the equipment for data acquisition and analysis. Familiarity with EM is desired, but will train with all methods of processing and image acquisition, as needed.

There are opportunities to actively participate in research with on-going projects. Stays current on methods and improvements of assays and the use of new equipment to help improve work in the lab administratively and research-wise. Supervises and trains staff and students. Oversees lab equipment and orders lab supplies in collaboration with technicians.

Our research centers on the organization of the prefrontal cortex and its role in central executive functions in primates. The goal is to investigate prefrontal pathways that interface with both excitatory and inhibitory neurons in cortical and subcortical structures that may provide the basis for the selection of relevant information and suppression of irrelevant information in behavior. Research involves investigation of bidirectional pathways between prefrontal cortices and structures associated with sensory, cognitive, mnemonic and emotional processes in the cortex, the thalamus, and the amygdala.
