The Department of Neuroscience at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in the preclinical research areas of alcohol or substance use disorders and co-morbid neuropsychiatric conditions to support the research mission of our NIAAA-funded P50 Charleston Alcohol Research Center. The ideal candidate will show strong promise as a future thought-leader, and clear potential to develop a cutting-edge research program focused on elucidating novel brain mechanisms and potential treatments with an emphasis on alcohol addiction or broader interests in substance use disorder and/or comorbid neuropsychiatric conditions. Major topics of interest include, but are not limited to, genomic and epigenomic mechanisms, neuroimmune and glial signaling, large-scale in vivo neurophysiology, and real-time manipulations of neural function and plasticity in relevant brain circuits. Applicants should have a PhD and/or MD with appropriate research expertise and an outstanding record of high-quality publications and extramural funding appropriate to current rank. The department values diversity, equity, and inclusion, and applicants from groups underrepresented in biomedical research are strongly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will benefit from a highly collaborative research environment and a competitive start-up package in a basic science department that receives ~$16 million annually in extramural grant awards and possesses a strong commitment to mentoring, collegiality, diversity, and an inclusive research environment. The department’s strengths in addiction sciences are bolstered by the NIAAA P50 Charleston Alcohol Research Center, a NIAAA T32 training grant, the NIDA P50 Center on Cocaine and Opioid Addiction, a NIDA T32 Training grant, a NIH-funded faculty mentoring grant, and a successful PhD graduate program. In addition, many of our neuroscience faculty work closely with research and clinical faculty in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences.

MUSC is located in the beautiful coastal city of Charleston, South Carolina – a city known for its diverse arts and culture, higher education, architecture, beaches, and top-rated restaurants. Charleston receives perennial honors as one of the most desirable places to visit and live.

Interested applicants should submit an application packet that includes their CV, a 3-page statement outlining research interests and mentoring/teaching experience, a 1-page statement on past or future Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts, and contact information for three professional references. Optionally, applicants may also include a one-page statement of pertinent personal background information and/or any non-traditional indicators of potential to become a successful independent investigator. Please send applications documents to Dr. Patrick Mulholland (mulholl@musc.edu) and reference “MUSC Neuroscience Faculty search” in the subject line. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, but applicants are encouraged to submit complete applications before November 30, 2022, for full consideration.

The Medical University of South Carolina is an Equal Opportunity Employer and is committed to workplace diversity. Applications from individuals with disabilities, females, minorities, and veterans are particularly welcome.
