The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)—a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)—is recruiting a tenure-track/tenure-eligible investigator in the Laboratory of Persistent Viral Diseases (LPVD) for the Division of Intramural Research (DIR).
LPVD is seeking an outstanding scientist to develop a vigorous independent program focused on the biology, pathogenesis, or immunology of human pathogens of the central nervous system (CNS). Applicants must have an M.D., Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant field with postdoctoral experience, as well as a strong publication record demonstrating potential for creative research. The ideal candidate should have expertise in infectious disease research in fields such as human virology, viral immunology, prion biology, or cell biology of the CNS. The incumbent will be expected to develop an exciting research program that includes basic and/or translational research on medically relevant diseases.
LPVD is located at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) campus in Hamilton, Montana, together with two additional laboratories: the Laboratory of Virology and the Laboratory of Bacteriology. Research conducted at RML includes studies of vector/reservoir transmission, pathogenesis, pathophysiology, and host immune response of viral, bacterial, and prion pathogens of concern to global health. RML has state-of-the-art biosafety level 2 (BSL-2), BSL-3, and BSL-4 facilities and core facilities for RNA-Seq and bioinformatics, proteomics, imaging (including electron microscopy and cryo-electron tomography), flow cytometry, and veterinary support. The incumbent will also have access to state-of-the-art research support located on the main NIH campus, including the NIH Clinical Center (a premier research hospital). RML is located in the scenic Bitterroot Valley of western Montana with easy access to some of the finest outdoor recreational opportunities in North America.

Salary is commensurate with experience and accomplishments. A full civil-service package of benefits (including retirement; health, life, and long-term care insurance; Thrift Savings Plan; etc.) is available.
