Department Description:  

The Department of Biology at UNC-Chapel Hill is dedicated to the discovery and dissemination of new and existing knowledge in the broad discipline of Biology by maintaining a high-quality faculty who integrate cutting-edge research and student-focused teaching.

We are one of the largest academic departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. We have over 2,800 majors and we enroll over 5,000 undergraduate students in our classes each year. The department is composed of 50 tenure-track faculty, 10 teaching faculty, 8 research faculty, and numerous active adjunct and emeritus faculty. We currently have 50 graduate students, 40 post-docs and employs approximately 60 additional graduate and undergraduate students from across the university to assist in our teaching and research missions. Our mission is supported by an administrative and technical staff of 20, with an additional 20 staff directly supporting research.

Position Description:  

The Department of Biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a faculty position in Neurobiology at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level. The potential start date is July 1, 2023.

We seek outstanding candidates in any field of basic neuroscience but particularly welcome applicants working in areas that intersect with departmental interests, which include cellular, behavioral, and systems neuroscience, neuroethology, and emerging integrative sub-disciplines such as neuroimmunology. The ideal candidate may work at multiple levels of biological organization and employ a combination of approaches including, but not limited to, advanced cellular or molecular imaging, electrophysiology, quantitative behavioral analysis, (opto)genetic manipulation of neural circuits, bioinformatics, and computational modeling. The department is best equipped to support research on non-mammalian systems but will consider work involving any invertebrate or vertebrate experimental platform.

Education Requirements:  

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in Biology, Neuroscience, or a related discipline, must have a demonstrated track record of scholarly productivity, and must be capable of developing an independent, extramurally-funded research program.

Qualifications and Experience:  

The successful candidate will also be able to fulfill the growing demand for teaching neuroscience at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
