The Neuroscience Center of Excellence (NCE) at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center (LSUHSC) in New Orleans is seeking highly motivated scientists with PhDs to fill Postdoctoral Fellow/Scholar positions for the following projects:

  • Ischemic stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI) seeking cellular and molecular potential neuroprotective avenues. The selected Postdoctoral Fellows will conduct experiments in rats and mice, surgery for experimental stroke, neurological/behavioral recovery, single-cell genomics and epigenomics, human neuron/astrocytes in culture, mediator lipidomics by LC/MS/MS, and immunohistochemistry. APOE4 (Alzheimer’s susceptibility) and APOE2 (resiliency/protective) significance in acute and chronic TBI in rats. The project will use single-cell genomics and epigenomics and LC-MS/MS lipidomic approaches. The targets are inflammatory response, autophagy, mitochondrial function, and cellular senescence programming. In addition, primary neurons, astrocytes, and microglia from the brains of ApoE3, ApoE2, and ApoE4 transgenic mice will be studied to explore neuroprotection by selected lipid mediators.
  • Regulatory events that sustain photoreceptor integrity and function, including the significance of DHA retention and how regulatory genes maintain homeostasis by mitigating damaging stress-induced events. We aim to define specific gene clusters and proteins that elicit the homeostatic integrity of photoreceptors and retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells and define selective gene clusters, which modulate pro-homeostatic and anti-oxidative proteins. We are exploring neuroprotective molecules and have identified pro-survival molecules termed elovanoids (ELVs). The goal is to uncover mechanisms underpinning blinding eye diseases (e.g., age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinitis pigmentosa), inflammation, and neuroprotection to develop therapeutic leads.

The incumbent/s will join research teams, which consist of multidiscipline experts in the field. They will have ample opportunities to acquire and develop new skills, conduct and publish innovative research, and acquire grantsmanship skills.

Salaries are highly competitive. The position is supported by NIH grants and will remain open until filled.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Neuroscience and Biological, Medical, our Biochemical fields Or MD with equivalent expertise We emphasize key qualifications, including integrity, creativity, resourcefulness, enthusiasm, ability to grasp new knowledge and skill rapidly, and the ability to identify novel queries and leads and solutions to problems. Candidates should be willing to share and facilitate knowledge and information with colleagues, and they are expected to be highly responsible.
