A research specialist position in the von Zastrow Lab at UCSF is available now, at the Junior or Assistant rank. Specialists appointed at the Junior rank must possess a bachelor’s degree, while Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess a master’s degree. Equivalent experience (4 years for the Junior rank; 5-10 years for the Assistant rank) in a research lab setting may also be considered. These requirements must be met by time of hire. We are an inter-disciplinary lab and graduates with degrees in neuroscience, biology, pharmacology, biochemistry or related disciplines will be considered. Most importantly, we are looking for someone who is talented, motivated and enthusiastic about scientific research.

The ideal candidate will have familiarity with one or more of the following preferred qualifications: microscopy, molecular biology, mammalian cell culture, instrumentation, and quantitative/computational analysis. Some lab-based research experience beyond coursework (two years would be ideal) is also required. This position is suitable for an individual who is looking to gain research experience and further career development. We are most interested in candidates who want to perform independent research in addition to supporting and managing a subgroup of the lab. Research responsibilities would be project-dependent, and would likely include microscopy, data analysis and cell and molecular biology experiments. We are looking for a minimum two-year time commitment.

Our lab is interested in the mechanics of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). How GPCRs get targeted to the cellular compartments (ie., primary cilia, plasma membrane) that they signal from? What governs GPCR signaling outcomes and how does that influence cellular response? While we know the cognate ligand and G protein for nearly all the GPCRs essential for cell signaling, we do not understand the underlying mechanics that drives the response or how key protein interactions at distinct cellular locations influence those cellular responses. New approaches are needed, and we are using molecular and genetic tools to address these questions. For example, we use CRISPR/Cas9 to modify cellular genomes to examine interactors, we use genetically encoded fluorescent tools to quantify cell signaling, we make primary neuron cultures from genetically modified animals, we use high resolution live imaging to monitor receptor activities in response to ligand, and probe key players using molecular and cell biology tools.
