Open Rank Tenure-Track or Tenured Faculty Position

Department of Neurobiology

University of Alabama at Birmingham

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine invites applications for tenure-track faculty positions in the Department of Neurobiology. We are seeking candidates who apply innovative approaches to investigate the development, function, and malfunction of the nervous system at all levels of analysis. Appointments may be at any rank. While all neuroscience areas are welcome, candidates with an interest in motivated behavior (drug use) or neurodevelopmental disorders are particularly encouraged to apply. The Department of Neurobiology at UAB SOM has a long history of promoting scientific excellence and diversity. We acknowledge multiple forms of bias and prejudice in academia and are working proactively to eliminate them.

UAB is a research-intensive university ranked in the top 10 among public universities for NIH funding. The Department of Neurobiology (link) is entering its 24th year as a well-funded department at UAB. Faculty are housed in custom-designed laboratories and offices in the Shelby Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Building and nearby Civitan International Research Center. The department has strengths in the molecular mechanisms of neuronal function, synaptic communication and plasticity, and animal models of disease. Faculty use technical approaches spanning molecular, genetic, cellular, systems, and behavioral levels of analysis. The Department of Neurobiology provides competitive start-up packages, substantial salary support, modern laboratory space, excellent core facilities, and extensive opportunities for collaborative research and participation in undergraduate, graduate and medical training programs. UAB is strongly committed to neuroscience research, and the department is expanding rapidly under new leadership. A broad and collegial environment for neuroscience research is facilitated by the UAB Comprehensive Neuroscience Center, a network of over 200 basic, translational and clinical faculty from 23 departments. UAB is also one of only six institutions across the nation to be supported by the NIH Common Fund’s Faculty Institutional Recruitment for Sustainable Transformation (FIRST) program, which seeks to enhance and maintain cultures of inclusive excellence in the biomedical research community.

UAB pursues the frontiers of education, research and health care and strives to be one of the most dynamic and productive universities of the 21st century. The total student enrollment has exceeded 22,0000 for three consecutive years. The School of Medicine has more than 1,200 full-time faculty and approximately 1,200 medical and graduate students. UAB is the largest employer in the state of Alabama with operating revenues of $3 billion. Birmingham is a cosmopolitan city at the heart of a metropolitan area with a population of 1.1 million people. It is a rich cultural center and progressive community with a low cost of living, moderate weather, and ample outdoor activities.

Successful candidates must have a Ph.D. and/or M.D in a related field and a strong record of research accomplishments. Faculty members are expected to establish active independent research programs and to participate in education of professional, graduate or undergraduate students. Women and minority candidates are especially encouraged to apply. The priority deadline for applications is October 1st, 2022, but applications will be considered until positions are filled. Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, list of references, a statement of their experiences promoting diversity, and a brief summary of current and proposed research activities as a single PDF file. Please include an explanation of any relevant COVID-related disruptions in the cover letter if desired. A pre-employment background check investigation is performed on candidates selected for employment.
