Assistant, Associate or Full Professor of Empire Innovation

The Department of Neuroscience & Physiology at SUNY Upstate Medical University (Syracuse, NY) invites applications from scientists with a record of high quality, original research related to Addiction Neuroscience. This tenure-eligible appointment will include a generous startup package with support from the Empire Innovation Program (SUNY).

Whereas all candidates carrying out addiction-related research will be considered, we are particularly interested in the study of addiction-relevant mechanisms at the genetic, molecular, cellular, circuitry and/or behavioral levels employing state-of-the-art approaches such as in vivo fluorescence imaging or electrophysiology, single-cell molecular profiling and/or opto- or chemo-genetic manipulations of neural circuitry.

The successful candidate will join a thriving Neuroscience community of over 40 investigators with broad research expertise in cellular, molecular, genetics, electrophysiology and behavioral approaches and a focus on human disease. Areas of strength of our community include nervous system development, structure and function of the retina, epigenomics, neural circuit plasticity, age-related neurodegenerative diseases and neuropsychiatric disorders. Our research is supported by state-of-the-art imaging, genomics, proteomics, and computational facilities, and growing Biobank capabilities.  In addition, our associated hospital has a large Addiction Medicine Program.

This rich set of campus resources are complemented by our historically strong association with Binghamton University, the home of the Developmental Exposure to Alcohol Research Center - an NIAAA supported Specialized Alcohol Research Center.

In addition to joining a thriving academic and research community, SUNY Upstate is a great place to work for all. In 2021, Upstate Medical University was ranked #35 on the Forbes list of America's best large employers. By earning this award, Upstate joins the ranks of only two dozen universities in the nation and organizations such as Ikea, Apple and NASA as honoree.

SUNY Upstate is situated at the center of NY state which is well-known for its parks, gorges, waterfalls, lake waterfronts, Thousand Islands, Finger Lakes Wine Country, and the Adirondack mountains. Upstate New York is a great area for outdoor activities and to experience the beauty of all four seasons. Syracuse offers convenient living in the city and surrounding suburbs (15-minute driving radius), with excellent schools and affordable homes. The city has a small and walkable downtown entertainment district, and its geographic location places residents only 4-5 hours away from New York City, Toronto, Montreal, or Boston by car.

Qualifications include PhD, MD or MD-PhD degree and a strong record of basic or translational research.  Postdocs with early career development awards from federal sources (K awards) or private foundations will be considered, as well as mid-career and senior applicants with current external funding (R01 or R01-equivalent).
