Tenure-Track Investigator 1
The National Institute on Aging (NIA) Intramural Research Program (IRP), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking applications from highly motivated individuals for the position of Tenure-Track Investigator 1 in the Center for Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias (CARD), located in Bethesda, MD.
CARD is a collaborative initiative between the NIA and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) that supports basic, translational, and clinical research on Alzheimer’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease related dementias (AD/ADRD). CARD’s central mission is to initiate, stimulate, accelerate, and support research that will lead to the development of improved treatments and preventions for these diseases. The new Center, which features a state-of-the-art facility and cutting edge technology, serves as a collaborative hub for research in the AD/ADRD space, leveraging the highly collaborative and collegial nature of the Intramural Research Program.
The successful candidate will develop an independent research program focused on one or both of two research areas detailed below, each directed toward an understanding of AD/ADRD.
Thematic area one: Modern molecular neuropathology, specifically work that aims to investigate the basis of AD/ADRD using human derived samples. A successful candidate will integrate standard neuropathological approaches with state-of-the-art research to include methods such as digital neuropathology, artificial intelligence based classification and investigation of neuropathology, and integration of these efforts with molecular evaluation of human tissue. This will include integrating neuropathology with bulk, single cell, and spatial genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics. The successful candidate will have a strong background and extensive experience in neurodegenerative disease research and modern neuropathology. It is to be expected that there will be significant interaction with existing groups both within and outside of CARD. Preference will be given to those with demonstrated experience in digital pathology, the application of artificial intelligence in pathology, the application of single cell-omics methods, and with a strong track record of collaborative research.
Thematic area two: Translating knowledge of the genetic basis of complex AD/ADRD into biological understanding of disease processes using a functional genetics and/or genomics approach. The successful candidate will launch a program that involves determining the cellular context(s), risk alleles, effector genes, and mechanisms linked to known and to-be-discovered genetic risk loci for AD/ADRD. The successful candidate will have a strong background and extensive experience in neurogenetics, high-content genomics, and data science. There are growing genomic data resources from relevant individuals and tissues for AD/ADRD including those aimed at revealing chromatin accessibility, chromatin organization, epigenetic marks, and transcriptional activity from brain, and single-cell populations. The successful applicant will use these existing data and play a major role in overseeing the expansion of such data within CARD, through ongoing acquisition, particularly in tissues and derived materials from underrepresented individuals. There will be significant support within CARD to enable such data production and analysis. Preference will be given to those with demonstrated experience in neurodegeneration, single-cell genomics, and with a strong track record of collaborative research.
The position includes an attractive start-up package and operating budget, including access to comprehensive NIA core facilities and to the unique and extensive resources of the NIH.
Eligible candidates must have a Ph.D. or M.D. (or M.D., Ph.D.) or equivalent doctoral degree in neuroscience, genetics, genomics, or related fields. The incumbent will play a major role in training staff and postdoctoral fellows and maintaining research continuity within CARD, as well as developing a network of intra- and extramural collaborations. The candidate’s capabilities must be demonstrated through publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals in the relevant field(s). The incumbent is expected to demonstrate peer recognition of their specific contributions.
Salary is commensurate with experience and accomplishments. A full Civil Service package of benefits (including retirement, health, life, and long-term care insurance, Thrift Savings Plan, etc.) is available.
