GENERAL SUMMARY:
A postdoctoral research fellow position is available immediately in the laboratory of Dr. Christa Nehs in the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital on an NIH-funded project. The overall goal of the lab is to investigate the role of metabolism and sleep in healthy aging and prevent the onset of chronic diseases including Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes. Specifically, the candidate will help investigate metabolic interventions to alleviate the metabolic-immune dysregulation that occurs in the aging brain to improve sleep and general anesthesia safety in the elderly.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Major duties and responsibilities include designing experiments, performing rodent surgical procedures to measure brain metabolites and electroencephalogram, cognitive tests in rodents, histology, immunohistochemistry and data analyses in MATLAB. Opportunities to communicate the science include weekly updates at lab meetings, oral presentations, manuscripts, grants and poster presentations at national conferences.
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Candidates are expected to work independently, communicate effectively, think critically, be good at recognizing and solving problems, be creative, be self-motivated, good at multi-tasking, organized, have strong interpersonal skills and work well in a highly collaborative environment.
The ideal candidate will have previous experience with rodents, be detail oriented and have a strong background in neuroscience, metabolism and/or aging.
Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be willing to work with rodents.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
PhD or MD in a relevant discipline: Neuroscience, Physiology, Metabolism, Aging, Signal Processing, and/or Statistics.
