LAB MANAGER and TECHNICIAN at Assistant Scientist Level
Dr. Victor Luna has started the Laboratory on Synaptic Aging in the Alzheimer’s Center at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Research in the lab is aimed at targeting cellular and molecular mechanisms that rejuvenate the aged brain to reverse cognitive and emotional impairments due to Alzheimer’s disease. Towards this end, the lab combines synaptic electrophysiology with gene manipulation, optogenetics, chemogenetics, pharmacology, and behavior (see Luna VM et al., Science, 2019; Anacker C et al., Nature, 2018; Chen BK et al., Biological Psychiatry, 2021).
The lab is seeking an Assistant Scientist who will provide professional level research support and lab management. The individual will receive training directly with Dr. Luna in procedures and experimental protocols involved in synaptic physiology, pharmacology, gene manipulation, and behavior. The position is suitable for an individual seeking to enter or continue a career in laboratory research work in aging and dementia.
Responsibilities include: maintenance of mouse colonies, running mouse behaviors, mouse surgeries, western immunoblotting, immunohistochemistry, calcium imaging, electrophysiology, as well as lab management (e.g. ordering supplies, institutional compliance, assist in instrument repair).
The Assistant Scientist will be tasked with executing experimental protocols, analyze data, maintain records, and maintain upkeep of lab equipment. The individual will be included as an author in manuscripts of projects involving their experiments. Additionally, there will be opportunities for the individual to present their results at meetings and conferences.
Required Education & Experience: Bachelor's Degree and at least 2 years of research-related experience. Experience as an undergraduate researcher can be applied toward the research experience requirement. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Required Skills and Abilities:
*Willingness to learn new scientific skills, procedures, experiments, protocols
*Demonstrated ability to independently conduct various experimental techniques with training
*Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate research records
*Working knowledge of applicable computer software (e.g. Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Prism, Matlab)
*Familiarity and comfort with managing mouse colonies
*Ability to work independently and as part of the laboratory team
