The Department of Psychology at the University of Virginia seeks to hire a postdoctoral research associate to work in the lab of Prof. Dan Meliza (https://www.meliza.org).
The research associate will lead a project to investigate experience-dependent plasticity in the songbird auditory system, with the goal of developing methods for early detection of auditory processing deficits associated with language learning disorders. We will be combining viral tools for gene manipulation with electrophysiology and behavior in zebra finches to determine how early experience interacts with known genetic risk factors as cortical-level auditory circuits are first learning the structure of vocal communication signals. This position offers opportunities for training in slice electrophysiology, large-scale extracellular electrophysiology in behaving birds, in vivo genetic manipulation techniques, and a broad range of computational methods.
The Meliza lab is part of a vibrant, inclusive, and collaborative community of systems, cellular, and molecular neuroscientists. Postdoctoral fellows have numerous opportunities for interactions and collaborations across the University through the Neuroscience Graduate Program (https://neurograd.virginia.edu/) and the UVA Brain Institute (https://braininstitute.virginia.edu/).
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must have a Ph.D. in a field related to neuroscience by the position start date and a record of productivity. Preference will be given to individuals who have expertise in circuit or systems neuroscience, and who have prior experience with scientific computer programming.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Apply online at https://uva.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/UVAJobs and attach a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and the contact information for three individuals who can provide professional reference letters. Please note that multiple documents can be uploaded in the box.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Review of applications will begin on May 2, 2022, but the position will remain open until filled. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.
This is a one-year appointment; however, appointment may be renewed for up to two additional years (one-year increments), contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.
