Greer Lab

Our interests are directed at understanding the mechanisms that regulate the formation of highly specific cellular circuits.  Using the tools of both cell biology and molecular biology we study the origins, migratory paths and final cellular fate of neurons including the formation of synapses.  Our toolbox includes in utero electroporation of plasmids to identify subpopulations of cells and to change the expression of candidate genes.  We employ high-resolution confocal microscopy to characterize and quantify protein expression in developmental frameworks.  In parallel we use electron microscopy to probe the ultrastructure of highly specialized synapses.  Throughout this work we use the olfactory system as a general model of the central nervous system due to its precocious embryonic development and accessibility.

A NIH-funded Postdoctoral Associate position is available in the Laboratory of Charles Greer in the Department of Neurosurgery, at Yale University School of Medicine. We are looking for a talented and highly motivated individual with interest in neurodevelopment and neural circuits in the olfactory system. Our laboratory recently discovered new routes of cell migration during the development of piriform cortex and olfactory tubercle, and now we are pursuing to comprehend the molecular mechanisms governing those migrations, cortical lamination, and connectivity. For more information about our research and publications, visit Pubmed/Greer CA.

Qualifications: (1) recent Ph.D. in Neuroscience/Neurobiology/Neurophysiology or related disciplines; (2) candidates with prior experience in two or more of the following techniques: rodent neuroanatomy and stereotaxic microinjections, in-utero injections and electroporations (IUE), CRISPR, cloning, virus-based neural tracing, immunohistochemistry or electron microscopy, will be given a priority; (3) excellent scientific writing ability, strong oral communication skills, self-motivation for research, and ability to lead work independently.

The position is funded by a NIH grant starting in Spring/Summer of 2022. The initial appointment is for one year and it is renewed yearly depending on satisfactory progress and aligned interests. To apply, send an email including a cover letter describing research experience and interests, a current CV including a list of technical skills and publications, and the name and contact information of 2 references to charles.greer@yale.edu
