Postdoctoral Research Associate

The laboratory of Dr. Lance McMahon at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences  is looking for up to two energetic, talented, and driven Postdoctoral Fellows to join a highly collaborative and multidisciplinary group of researchers engaged in CNS drug discovery and blood brain barrier research in Amarillo, Texas. The team’s expertise includes medicinal chemistry, in vitro pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, behavioral pharmacology and pre-clinical models of CNS function and disease. Candidates should have a background in psychology, pharmacology, neuroscience, or physiology or some combination thereof. These positions are supported by ample funding from NIH and internal sources and are immediately available. The successful candidate(s) will immediately join ongoing experiments, as well as will design their own experiments, publish, travel to scientific meetings, and communicate their science in both written and oral presentation formats in a diversity of settings. Hodge School of Pharmacy, which is the home of a comprehensive graduate program in pharmaceutical sciences and is the location of the newly opened Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine, a $300M dollar state of the art facility.

Major/Essential Functions

The chosen Postdoctoral Fellow(s) will perform in vitro (cell lines), ex vivo (brain tissue), and in vivo (rodents) work on psychoactive compounds. The main goals of these studies will be to understand the underlying pharmacological mechanisms of isolated compounds as they pertain to the development of novel opioid abuse/ dependence and pain therapeutics. The chosen Postdoctoral Fellow(s) will be responsible for participating in research projects associated with research assistants, graduate students, and interns, as well as assisting in the preparation of data and manuscripts for presentation and publication. These valuable laboratory members are expected to attend lab meetings and events as required to present findings. The chosen Postdoctoral Fellow(s) may supervise the research assistants, graduate students, and interns.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., D.Sc., M.D.) in area of project specialization of behavioral pharmacology, physiology, or neuropharmacology. The successful Postdoctoral Fellow candidate(s) will possess one or both of the following skill sets: radioligand receptor binding, OR operant conditioning/microdialysis/aseptic surgical techniques. The successful candidate must also be able to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on scientific principles. Additionally important, the candidate should have good oral and written communication skills, as well as the ability to foster and maintain good working relationships.
