Job-Specific Responsibilities

The Tan-Yang Center for Autism Research at Harvard aims to understand the biological basis of nervous system development as it relates to autism spectrum disorder. We are seeking a Program Manager who will be responsible for planning scientific events and outreach activities, running a postdoctoral fellowship program, managing a website, newsletter, and social media, developing new community-building activities, and liaising with the related scientific and administrative units at Harvard University, as well as our sister Center at the McGovern Institute at MIT. This individual would serve as a convening force bringing together bench scientists from different member labs, and also building bridges between these academic researchers and autism awareness and advocacy organizations. Job Specific Duties:

  • Event-related duties will include organizing regular scientific meetings for Center labs and postdoctoral fellows, annual retreat and symposia, journal clubs, outreach lectures, guest speaker visits, and scientific advisory board meetings.
  • Communications-related duties will include managing center website, newsletter, mailing list, and social media, gathering and synthesizing scientific reports from members labs, and writing reports on Center outreach activities for advisory board and donors.
  • Liaising duties will include working with the finance office to track and manage Center funds, development office on stewardship, sister Center on joint programming, and advisory board members on annual meetings. The Program Manager will also work to integrate the Center’s new ventures with existing neuroscience activities of the Department of Neurobiology and Harvard Brain Science Initiative.
  • Other duties will include administering the postdoctoral fellowship program and any internship programs offered by the Center. This may include managing an application and review process and coordinating educational activities, housing, logistics, and social activities for summer students.
  • The Program Manager may also be asked to assist faculty with grant applications or support the work of other centers, programs, or initiatives associated with the Department of Neurobiology and Harvard Brain Science Initiative.
  • This position will report jointly to the Department of Neurobiology and Harvard Brain Science Initiative Liaisons for the Tan-Yang Center, with dotted line to Faculty Directors of the Center.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and minimum 5 years of relevant work experience. PhD may count towards experience.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • PhD or advanced degree preferred. Work experience in a university or non-profit setting is ideal.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and writing ability are essential. Strong communication skills, creativity, flexibility, attention to detail, ability to read and synthesize complex scientific reports, ability to prioritize, and ability to navigate relationships with multiple stakeholders who may have competing priorities. Willingness to learn new skills and adapt to changing needs of Center as it grows. Mindset of doing whatever is needed, big or small, to get tasks done from start to finish.

  • Please note, there may be an occasional need to work after hours for special events, and to travel to different campuses within Harvard University, affiliated hospitals, or our sister Center at MIT.

This is a 12-month term appointment with the possibility of renewal con ngent on funding.

This Staff role may start as a remote posi on due to the COVID-19 pandemic and while restric ons are s ll in place. The current remote nature of this role is considered temporary and may change as the University con nues to evaluate op ons. While we con nue to monitor the evolving COVID-19 guidelines, local on-campus work may be expected for some roles. Harvard Medical School does support flexible schedules, subject to individual departments’ business needs.
