Position Summary
Job Title: Postdoctoral Position in Enteric Neuroscience at Michigan State University

The Gulbransen laboratory in the Department of Physiology at Michigan State University is recruiting several postdoctoral fellows to fill open research positions on projects investigating the roles of enteric glia in enteric neurocircuits, visceral pain, neuroinflammation, and a project investigating interactions between peripheral nerves and perivascular adipose tissue.
The Gulbransen lab uses advanced cellular imaging and genetic approaches to study the roles of glia in the digestive tract in health and disease. Major techniques used in these studies include network- and cellular-level calcium imaging with GCaMPs, selective cell stimulation using chemogenetics, RNA sequencing, GI disease models, and physiological assays of gut function. The candidate will have the opportunity to learn a wide spectrum of laboratory techniques and will have access to state-of-the-art technology that will lead to independent research projects in this area. The group is well funded and ongoing projects include studies that focus on how enteric glia regulate intestinal motor functions and how enteric glia regulate visceral pain.
The successful candidates will be expected to conduct experiments, collect and analyze data, give research presentations, write scholarly papers, provide progress reports, and mentor graduate and undergraduate students in the lab. There will also be opportunities to participate in professional development programs and to write and submit grants and career development awards.
The candidate will have the opportunity to learn a wide spectrum of laboratory techniques and will have access to state-of-the-art technology that will lead to independent research projects in this area. The group is well funded and ongoing projects include studies that focus on how enteric glia regulate intestinal motor functions and how enteric glia regulate visceral pain.
This position is a 12-month fixed term appointment. Renewal of position is based on funding and performance. Qualified candidates must have a PhD or MD degree and should have some or all of the following attributes: 1) a strong background in neuroscience (preferably enteric neuroscience) and/or cellular/molecular gastroenterology, 2) a publication record of primary research articles including at least one lead-author publication, 3) excellent communication skills (written/spoken English), 4) an excellent academic record, 5) a keen desire to learn, and 6) previous research experience in cellular neuroscience, physiology, or gastroenterology.
