As part of our new and expanding Texas Institute of Restorative Neurotechnologies (TIRN), at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth –, we invite applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow position in the Neuroscience of Mood & Emotion.

We are looking for candidates who are interested in questions regarding the neurobiology of mood and emotions such as anxiety, depression and fear in relevant cortical regions using systems-level approaches and computational methods. Specifically, we are interested in individuals who currently use or are interested in using intracranial recordings in humans, as there is access to a very busy epilepsy surgery program performing intracranial implants and resections on a regular basis. Interest in multimodal integration approaches that also incorporate fMRI, DTI, brain mapping by direct cortical stimulation, electro-corticography, and MEG is also welcome, as access to a 3T research only MRI scanner, a MEG scanner are also available.

The postdoctoral researcher will work under the guidance of Dr. Nitin Tandon ( in the Department of Neurosurgery (, and will collaborate with mood/emotion experts in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (

The successful candidate must be a self-starter, motivated, and enthusiastic scientist. It is anticipated that the individuals selected will take responsibility for designing and carrying out research projects, assembling results of research into manuscripts for publication, and participate in laboratory maintenance. Additionally, the individuals will participate in the preparation of grants for submission to funding agencies and in providing guidance and assistance to other student members of the laboratory.

Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in Neuroscience or a related field.

Welcome to the functional and structural neuro-imaging and intra-cranial electrophysiology lab in the neurological surgery department at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. This lab focuses on the study of cognitive functions using imaging and invasive electrophysiology. We are particularly interested in higher cognitive functions, including language, memory and executive control. We study these processes in normal humans and in patients undergoing resection for epilepsy or brain tumors. Diffusion tractography, functional MRI and behavioral testing are carried out prior to and after resections. In many patients, we also study cortical processes using intracranial electro-physiologic techniques. These electrocortico-graphic and cortical stimulation data are also compared with the functional and structural imaging data to better delineate the network underlying these disseminated cognitive operations.
