Tenure Line Faculty in Neural Engineering

The College of Engineering, the Huck Institutes of Life Sciences, and the Center for Neural Engineering at Penn State University Park campus invite applications for open tenure line faculty positions with research focus in Neural Engineering.

The enterprise of understanding the brain and nervous system, interfacing with them, and curing their ills has become increasingly mathematical and technology-driven, with cross-disciplinary and collaborative contributions from scientists, engineers and mathematicians. Penn State has a robust neural engineering community with research spanning neural computation; basic and disease related neurophysiology; development and application of neurodevices, neurotechnologies, and neuromimetics; and the development and application of neural data sciences. Our Center for Neural Engineering (CNE) serves as an academic collaboration environment, and has just launched an NIH-funded (T32) predoctoral training program. PSU is committed to further expanding its research efforts and training in this enterprise.

This is an open search (open department and open rank), and is supported by the College of Engineering (COE) and the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences.

Research Expectations: The successful candidates will have demonstrated research expertise in neural engineering, and will be expected to establish self-sustaining research programs. More senior candidates will be expected to take leadership roles in collaborative/university-level and external initiatives. We are especially interested in recruiting:

• persons able to bridge from bench to bedside in treatment and in development and deployment of neurotechnologies

• researchers engaged in high-density electrophysiological and multimodal measures and multimodal stimulation, acquisition and processing of large physiological and behavioral measures

• researchers engaged in both development of modern technologies and their application for basic or applied neurosciences. Example research fields include but are not limited to applications in mental health, neurorehabilitation, and the enteric nervous system and interoception.

Teaching Expectations: The successful candidates will be expected to help develop, shape and support educational and mentoring efforts at the undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral levels in neural engineering and quantitative neuroscience.

DEI Expectations: Inclusion, equity, and diversity are central to Penn State's obligation and commitment as a public institution of higher education to provide effective teaching for all people in our communities. The successful candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to enhancing diversity and will be expected to support the efforts in advancing the University's DEI efforts (https://strategicplan.psu.edu/plan/foundations/inclusion-equity-diversity/).

Institutes and Centers: Cross-disciplinary, cross-departmental and cross-college collaborations are encouraged at PSU, and are facilitated through a range of institutes and research centers. These positions are envisioned to leverage Penn State's interdisciplinary infrastructure, particularly the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences (Huck.psu.edu), the Center for Neural Engineering (cne.psu.edu), the Materials Research Institute (MRI.psu.edu), and the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (icds.psu.edu), as well as leverage collaborations with the College of Medicine.

Penn State's College of Engineering is committed to creating a diverse and welcoming community that is pursuing engineering education, research, and community engagement with the power to inspire change and impact tomorrow. The college is also committed to work-life balance, a strong appreciation for diversity and inclusion, and family-friendly programs for faculty. We seek faculty candidates who share our vision and want to make an impact with their careers.

Qualifications: Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in an engineering, science or other quantitative field by the hire date, and track record of accomplishments in both research and teaching commensurate with rank of the candidate defined by PSU policy AC21 (https://policy.psu.edu/policies/ac21#D). In particular, applicants at Associate Professor should have well established teaching and independent research lines and international recognition. Applicants at the full Professor level should more substantial advanced research portfolio and will be expected to take leadership roles in research at the university. Applicants with interdisciplinary neuroscience-related backgrounds are highly encouraged to apply. Nominations and applications will be screened immediately and considered until the position is filled.

Application Process: Applicants should submit, in one PDF file: (1) a cover letter summarizing impact in advancing neural engineering and potential synergies at PSU, the CNE, and external community, (2) curriculum vitae, (3) statements of demonstrated contributions and plans for (a) research, (b) teaching, and (c) diversity, equity, and inclusion, (4) up to three key publications (5) names and addresses of four references.

Application review will begin immediately and will continue until the positions are filled. The expected start date is August 15, 2022.

Inquiries: Inquiries can be directed to the search chair Dr. Bruce Gluckman COE_NeuralEng_Searchpsu.edu.
