Job Description

NOTE: This is a two-year term appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.

We have an opening for a Biology Postdoctoral Researcher to investigate blood brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction and viral pathogenesis in the brain. A successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team working at the intersection of neuroscience, virology, and immunology, employing diverse cellular and molecular biology techniques. This position is in Microbiology and Immunology Group of the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division.

In this role you will:

• Design and conduct experiments in neuroimmunology, molecular biology, and cell biology in support of studies aimed at elucidating regulatory mechanisms of BBB integrity.

• Employ mouse models of viral infection and BBB disruption

• Develop and implement protocols for isolation of brain tissue for single cell RNA sequencing (scRNAseq) and spatial transcriptomic analysis.

• Employ other methods of cellular and molecular characterization on mouse brain tissue such as histology, flow cytometry, qPCR, etc.

• Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory

• Present formal and informal overviews of experimental progress at regular meetings.

• Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences seminars and/or technical meetings.

• Maintain and establish laboratory protocols, an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook including complete records of experiments.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• PhD in Neuroscience, Virology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Microbiology, or related field.

• Proficiency working with mice, including models of infectious disease, neurodegenerative disorders, and/or characterizing in vivo immune responses.

• Proficiency isolating and processing mouse tissues for cellular and molecular analyses

• Proficiency with one or more cellular/molecular characterization techniques, such as flow cytometry, histology, RNA sequencing, etc.

• Ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.

• Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.

Qualifications we desire:

• Experience with scRNAseq and/or spatial transcriptomics and flow cytometry

• Experience with histology (sample preparation, sectioning, staining for IHC, etc.)

• Familiarity with sequencing data and with mouse models of behavioral studies.
