Job Description:

The Ashley lab at Western Kentucky University is hiring a postdoctoral fellow to conduct studies to investigate the effect of glucocorticoids upon microglial activation and cytokine gene activation using mouse models exposed to sleep fragmentation. This NIH-funded project has ramifications for the treatment of primary sleep abnormalities, such as obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia. The successful candidate will develop expertise in small-animal surgery, piezoelectric sleep monitoring, sleep analysis, functional proteomics, quantitative PCRs, immunohistochemistry, and other molecular techniques. In addition, the successful candidate will gain experience mentoring graduate and undergraduate students working in the laboratory. Funding is 3 years, and the position is scheduled to begin the summer of 2021.  Continuation is dependent upon funding/need.

Principle Duties:

  • Conduct neurobiological studies on microglial activation, inflammation, and sleep
  • Supervise graduate and undergraduate students
  • Collect and analyze neurobiological and physiology data
  • Write peer-reviewed scientific papers for publication
  • Present studies at scientific conferences
  • Help mentor student research projects.

 


Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, Neuroscience, or Psychology
  • Evidence of self-motivation, independence, and productivity
  • The successful candidate must be comfortable with conducting research on rodents
