Position Description:

The intramural program of the National Eye Institute invites applications for a position as a Staff Scientist (Title 42 Scientist I) in the Section on Perception, Cognition and Action supervised by Bevil Conway, part of the Laboratory of Sensorimotor Research (LSR).

The position is full-time-equivalent (FTE) and renewable, and our goal is to recruit a candidate who will become a valued permanent member of the research team, subject to periodic performance review.

Applicants will be expected to work closely with, and mentor, other members of the group, to plan, conduct, and disseminate original neurophysiological, neuroanatomical, and behavioral research on the nervous system, especially related to vision. The candidate will be involved in several projects, depending on their interests, and will also be encouraged to develop independent projects.

Research in the Conway Lab aims to understand how retinal signals are transformed through the visual system into perceptions and thoughts that drive behavior, often using color as a model system. We leverage a range of techniques including fMRI in humans and monkeys, psychophysics, modeling, micro-electrode recording, and causal manipulations.

The LSR and the Conway Lab aim to foster a highly collaborative, supportive, and engaged atmosphere for creative neuroscientific research. The successful candidate will receive a salary commensurate with experience and accomplishments, within the range $80,354 and $143,969.  A full Civil Service package of benefits is available, including leave, retirement, health, life, long-term care insurance, and a savings plan (401K equivalent). Applicants should have a graduate degree in biological science, neuroscience, computer science, psychology, machine vision, cognitive science, or related fields, and demonstrated success in original research. Ideally, candidates would have expertise in at least two of the following areas: color science (colorimetry, image analysis); psychophysics; computer programming (Matlab, Java script, Java, UNIX, python); animal training; neural recording; neurophysiological recording; analysis of neurophysiological data; functional MRI; and computational modeling. The successful candidate must also have outstanding interpersonal skills, teamwork, excellent oral and written communication abilities, experience with mentoring, and a commitment to diversity.
