The Roberts Lab at the University of Michigan is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to investigate how neural circuits in the central auditory system perform computations essential for processing speech and other vocalizations. Our lab recently identified VIP and NPY neurons as the first two molecularly identifiable neuron classes in the auditory midbrain. We are now leveraging these discoveries to determine how defined sources of ascending input and local midbrain circuits combine to shape the coding of speech-related cues. To accomplish this, we are combining in vivo electrophysiology with a variety of cutting-edge approaches including transgenic mice, viral transfections, optogenetics, and chemogenetics. Prior experience with in vivo or in vitro electrophysiology, optogenetics, and/or viral transfection is desired, but candidates with other relevant experience and a strong interest in the role of neural circuits in sensory processing will be considered.

The Roberts Lab believes quality mentorship, open communication, and a supportive and diverse lab environment are key to promoting individual and team success. Current and past lab members have successfully competed for external funding from the NIH, NSF, German Research Foundation, and private foundations, and a current postdoctoral fellow has a K99/R00 proposal that was recently approved by NIDCD council. The Roberts Lab is part of the Kresge Hearing Research Institute (KHRI) at the University of Michigan. Kresge and the broader neuroscience community at U-M provide a world-class research environment and excellent career development opportunities for postdoctoral fellows.
