Job Details

The Huda lab at Rutgers University is seeking multiple postdoctoral associates interested in learning and using in-vivo two photon imaging and holographic optogenetic stimulation techniques to investigate neuronal and astrocyte circuits for movement, reinforcement, and decision-making in health and disease. We take a systems neuroscience approach to study the structure, function, and plasticity of brain circuits underlying behavioral functions in mice, and how dysregulation of these circuits gives rise to neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative conditions. Currently funded projects explore: 1) cortical and subcortical circuits in perceptual and value based decisions, and their dysfunction in neuropsychiatric conditions like alcohol use disorder; and 2) the functional role of astrocyte-neuron interactions in the striatum in movement control during health and disease.

Our work combines a portfolio of diverse techniques including quantitative mouse behavior, cellular and subcellular resolution two-photon microscopy, holographic single-cell and bulk optogenetics, viral-based anatomical tracing, and slice electrophysiology. Our work is currently supported by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Brain Research Foundation, Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (NARSAD), American Parkinson Disease Association, and the Parkinson’s Foundation.

We are looking for passionate scientists who are motivated by important questions and have the necessary dedication, work ethic, and attitude to address them in a systematic and scientifically rigorous way. This position offers a unique opportunity to join a new lab where you will enjoy unparalleled support from a PI distinctly committed to your technical and conceptual training, mentorship, and career development. It is an excellent opportunity for neuroscientists looking to advance their training in next-generation in-vivo approaches for assessing neural circuit function as it relates to behavior and disease.

Applicants should have a PhD or be nearing completion of their doctorate in neuroscience or a related field. Applicants with a background in physics, engineering, and/or computer science and a strong interest in neuroscience research are also encouraged to apply. Ability to work both independently and in teams consisting of undergraduate and graduate students is expected, along with good written and oral communication skills. Previous experience with one or more of the following is highly desirable but not a strict requirement: physiology techniques (two-photon microscopy, in-vivo extracellular or slice ex-vivo electrophysiology), coding skills in MATLAB and/or Python, rodent behavior, and small animal surgeries. We are foremost looking for passionate scientists eager to learn new things.

To apply, please send: a cover letter describing your research interests and qualifications; a CV; and contact information for three references to rafiq.huda@rutgers.edu.
