HJF is seeking a Scientist I to conduct translational research at the School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University in support of the Center for Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine (CNRM) located at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to CRNM.

Develops and conducts research projects conduct in experimental models to screen therapies for sleep disorders and other persistent symptoms associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and related clinical conditions under the direction of Dr. Regina Armstrong. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products, and problems. Develops new technologies and protocols.

  1. Formulates experimental hypotheses, designs, and executes experimental protocols. (25%)
  2. Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards. Analyzes and interprets experimental data, including statistical analyses. (25%)
  3. Coordinates and contributes to new grant and funding applications. (5%)
  4. Trains and supervises laboratory technicians, as needed. (15%)
  5. Prepares written reports and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals. (5%)
  6. Performs highly skilled and specialized laboratory research techniques, such as sleep behavior studies using electrophysiological (EEG/EMG) studies and stereotaxic surgery. (25%)
  7. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.  

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques; excellent communication skills; ability to troubleshoot technical procedures; ability to work independently and supervise others.  

Minimum Education: Doctorate or equivalent degree required for this position.   

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: Minimum of 2-5 years required for this position.  

Supervisory Responsibilities: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.

Work Environment: This position requires interaction with rodents on a regular basis to conduct research.

Work Arrangement: Mainly on-site with a few hours of telework available. 

Background/Security: Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
